携帯電話が手のひらサイズのプロジェクターに──TIのDLPピコ・プロジェクタ
米Texas Instrumentsは3月26日、CTIA Wireless 2007で携帯電話に内蔵できるほど小さなDLPプロジェクターの試作機を公開した。 DLPピコ・プロジェクタは単独でも製品化は可能だが、携帯電話やポータブルメディアプレーヤーなどに組み込んでの利用も想定している 米Texas Instruments（以下TI）は3月26日、米国フロリダ・オーランドで開催されている携帯電話や無線通信技術の展示会「CTIA Wireless 2007」で、同社が開発した超小型DLPプロジェクター「DLPピコ・プロジェクタ」の試作機を公開した。試作機は携帯電話に組み込まれており、携帯電話の画面をスクリーンなどに投影できる。 DLPプロジェクターは、DMD（Digital Micromirror Device）と呼ばれる、極小サイズの鏡（マイクロミラー）を敷き詰めたチップを利用するプロジェクターだ（詳細は2004年9月の記事参照）。滑らかでシャープな映像の投影が可能なほか、色再現性が高いなど、さまざまな特徴があり、データプロジェクターやホームシアター用のプロジェクターに採用されている。
TIでは2006年から、持ち運びが容易な小型のDLPポケット・プロジェクタ用DMDを供給しており、2月に開催された3GSM World Congress 2007でも、DLPポケット・プロジェクタと計帯電話を接続する利用方法などを提案した（2月16日の記事参照）。今回のDLPピコ・プロジェクタには、このDLPポケット・プロジェクタの技術を応用した。
